Spelling errors and hits

May 15, 2008

When I first wrote the post about Wikipedia called Wikipedia, a place to share, I spelled Wikipedia wrong. I spelled it Wikiepedia. i learned about it because my referrer stats showed me that someone searching for Wikiepedia found my site.

In other words, someone looking for something else, found me. The post was irrelevant to them. And yet, that would never be reflected in the analytics. They would count as a hit, even as they brought down the average time spent on site number.

Fact is, we can find a number of ways to drive traffic to a site. They can be purposeful deceptions, or accidental ones. But each time they are purposeful, people’s guards go up just a little more. And then the people working hard to be relevant have to work that much harder to be that much more relevant.

So be purposefully relevant, not deliberately misleading.
