On stealing and marketing
I actually went to copywriting school. Humber College in Toronto has a course, and I graduated from it. On one of my first days, the teacher informed us that stealing was good.
I remember her speech on stealing. We should steal, she said, from many conversations, old movies, old TV shows, old ads, old stories, new stories, etc. She went on to make the point that advertising is about stealing insights and making them part of the brand.
I remember loving the speech. I wonder if she stole it from here.
I stole it from here:

I see this all the time not just in marketing. I’ve watch a few times the A&E shows ‘Hoarders’ and ‘Intervention’ and just recently noticed that TLC now has similar shows.
I was say that I’m not stealing, I’m being inspired.
