Quantas Airways smartly jumps on a meme
The headline in Reddit says is all:
“Woman’s Twitter page mistaken as page for cricket match, flooded with comments about the game.“
Yes, a woman with the Twitter handle @theashes is learning that some fans take their Cricket seriously.
It’s funny, but it’s not the reason for the post.
The reason is this post from @Quantas_Airways:
They noticed something funny happening on the Internet. Suburban American mom wakes up one morning to find that people all over the world think she’s a Cricket Match.
Americans hilariously don’t care about cricket, so she posts: “What the hell is cricket?”
People think it’s funny that other people think she’s a Cricket Match and pile on. Many people blog about it and/or report it, and for a while, a Meme is created out of nothing.
But Quantas jumps in with a smart offer.
They’ll fly her to Australia to see about this ashes thing. The PR pitch writes itself if she says yes (and she replied with, add my boyfriend and you’ve got a deal).
This might turn into one of the most successful little events of the year for Quantas, because if it works, their brand will be connected to the Ashes, even though it through @theashes.
What meme could your brand jump on ? Could you get it approved fast enough?
