Social media needs a goal

October 9, 2008

Period. That’s it.

If you don’t have a goal, don’t even start. It would be like hiring builders to build your house and then walking away and letting them put the master bedroom in a room next to the kitchen because it’s a cool new thing to do.

For a year I’ve been spouting on this blog that social media is many things, but mostly, it’s a tool in the marketers tool box.

It’s not about conversations, communities, fans or friends. And yet maybe it is. Because it’s about goals. And the patient plan to acheive them.

That said, I like this post about the Fallacies of Social Media. He hits on many of the things I’ve been talking about for a long time.

Take a look. Then, if you’re interested, here’s my quick summary about social media.
